The little bits are mine,
trailing the vine into the canopy
with all the green like a vast sky
and all the blue just dots like stars
and all the black below on the dirt floor
and one could truly let go and plummet not to earth
but into the air and it could be just

a twist of the vine
that catches your foot
like some last cowboy
lost in the jungle
leaving the sky himself
for darker alternatives
so just the little bits are his.

And there is this long chain of it
climbing into the earthen sky
dangling its promise to save another
till someone or something recalls
what's out there in the night.
